Course description

Online learning has become an integral part of modern education. Yet designing a successful online course is a challenge for most. This course will guide you through designing your online courses using your existing face-to-face learning materials or from scratch. You will learn easy and effective digital design practices to transform your online classes into active learning environments. Discover how to optimise your online resources and learn about active learning strategies online. Explore your design process and how to improve continuously through feedback.

During the course, you are encouraged to debate with your fellow teachers, present your own course designs, share experiences and give feedback. By the end of the course, you will be able to organize and expand your online resources in an effective way. You will also be more effective in including active learning activities in your online classes. In addition, you will be able to readily apply best design practices when designing your next online class.

Session details

Session 1: Quick access to useful resources

Save time by using existing digital resources and quality educational materials. During this session, you will learn how to find them quickly. Discover how to adapt and create useful digital content. In your weekly challenge, you will create a depository of resources for you and your fellow teachers.

Session 2: The art of active learning, online

Active learning strategies involve case studies, problem-solving, role-playing, and other methods. During these activities, students use higher-order thinking skills and are enticed to take on more responsibility as a learner. During this session, you will explore sample active learning activities you can use in your classes. As the week’s challenge, you will propose changes to a sample lesson plan to reflect active learning principles.

Session 3: Follow the yellow brick road to design and redesign

Transform your face-to-face course into an online learning experience. Discover the 5 steps that lead from your classroom lesson to an engaging online format. You will use your own learning materials to create the outline of your course online.

Session 4: Teaching methodologies that rock

If your goal is to help students acquire transferable skills such as creativity, flexibility, problem-solving, and collaboration, you will be interested in Project-Based Learning, Problem-Based Learning, and Design Thinking. We will analyse examples and consider how to use these frameworks within the context of your online class.

Session 5: Transcending your design

Learn how to implement ongoing feedback processes to improve your materials effectively. You will evaluate feedback, analyse issues, and propose solutions. As the final challenge of the course, you will share the outline of your brand-new course or lesson and receive feedback from peers and the facilitator.
