Course description

We live in a fast-changing and challenging world. To thrive in this environment, it is key to become emotionally resilient and to channel our emotions in a positive way.  During this course, you will apply techniques to focus your mind and calm down. You will learn how to reflect on your emotions when making decisions and facing challenges. You will also discuss critical steps for schools adapting to teaching during the pandemic, using Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) strategies. We will explore best practices of how to create a safe environment, deepen existing relationships, provide opportunities for connection, and raise data for ongoing improvement. At the end of the course, you will be able to apply a range of techniques and strategies to strengthen your mental well-being and that of your students. You will also receive curated resources to continue learning and practising after the course.

Session details

Session 1: Understand Social and Emotional Learning

Explore the origins, models, and effectiveness reports of SEL techniques and discuss benefits, challenges, and solutions. Discover the 5 SEL competencies model and some examples of good practices.

Session 2: Cultivate relationships

Transform the atmosphere of your class using SEL techniques focusing on social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making.

Session 3: Connect and heal

In this session, you will learn how to create the space to allow for connecting and healing among peers.

Session 4: Create a safe space

Discover practical ways to build inclusive environments that place the students’ social, emotional, and academic development at its centre. We will discuss ideas on how to build adult-to-student and peer-to-peer relationships, how to find opportunities for SEL practice and reflection, and how to implement a system of support.

Session 5: Share to empower

Practice giving value to the experiences and perspectives of all members of your school community. Collaboratively develop a responsive plan for re-engaging students and adults in a new type of learning experience.
