In recent years, competency-based learning approaches have been introduced in Ireland and many other countries. The goal is to better prepare students for their future careers and to foster competences that students will need throughout their entire lives.
Competences are defined as a combination of knowledge, skills and attitudes. Due to their complex nature, teaching and assessing competences is not always straightforward. Competency-based learning also requires more active involvement from the students. They need to create and perform, collaborate and communicate, take on responsibility and make decisions.
